Summer Retreat in Slano
27 July 2025

From July 7 to 11, we had the great joy of organizing a summer retreat for nineteen young refugees from Syria, Ukraine, Iraq, Argentina, and Congo, which took place at the House of Our Lady in Grgurići, near Slano. This initiative was made possible thanks to the openness and collaboration of the Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption (Cathedral) in Dubrovnik, as well as the support of Caritas of the Diocese of Dubrovnik.
During the five days spent on the Adriatic coast, the young participants had the opportunity to swim, take part in sports and creative workshops, and share meals and joyful moments filled with laughter and spontaneity. We placed special emphasis on creating a space of safety, trust, and mutual acceptance – a space where everyone could express themselves and feel seen and welcomed.
The diversity of languages, cultures, and personal stories among the participants was not a barrier – on the contrary, it was a true richness. Alongside our staff, volunteers from Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, and Ukraine accompanied the group, contributing with their personal experiences and deepening the spirit of understanding and mutual support.
A special highlight of the program was a one-day trip to Dubrovnik, where local volunteer Lucija Stahor guided us through the UNESCO-protected Old Town. In addition to discovering the city’s cultural heritage and beauty, the young participants experienced the warmth and hospitality of the local community, who welcomed them with sincere joy.
This experience once again reminded us how important it is to offer young refugees not only material support but also spiritual, emotional, and social closeness. In a time when many carry the burden of loss, insecurity, and uprootedness, our shared efforts bear witness to the Gospel message of hope, acceptance, and concrete love for one another.
What remains are the photos, memories, and new friendships – but most of all, the message that every person is worthy of attention, that no one is forgotten, and that together we can build a world where every young person, regardless of their background, has the right to dignity, joy, and a future.
